Beginning from the collapse of the USSR (1991) Russia has been forming a new post-Soviet Russian identity, a system of priority values aimed at strengthening the unity of the multi-national, multi-confessional country with deep social and wealth inequalities. To understand what myth of the civil nation is taking shape in Rus-sia today it is important to reveal the strengths and weaknesses of nationalism and to deter-mine whether there is a difference between nationalism and patriotism, between civil and ethnic forms of nationalism
